Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday strongly opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar, claiming the move compromises the integrity of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
“If SIR is not stopped, then the Bihar elections have no meaning. I can already tell you the result—if SIR continues, BJP will win,” Singh said while speaking to ANI.
His remarks came ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, set to begin on Monday, where 24 INDIA bloc members have vowed to raise concerns over the SIR process and other national issues including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Singh also reiterated that AAP is no longer officially part of the INDIA alliance post the Lok Sabha elections. While the party had partnered with Congress in Delhi during the general elections, they contested separately in the Delhi and Haryana Assembly polls.
“We have clarified our position—the INDIA alliance was only for the Lok Sabha elections. Now, our priority is to raise the issue of demolition of homes and shops of people from Bihar, UP, and Purvanchal in Delhi. That’s what we will focus on in Parliament,” he said.
Meanwhile, leaders from various INDIA bloc parties held a virtual meeting on Saturday, including Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, as well as Sharad Pawar (NCP-SP), Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Omar Abdullah (J&K NC), Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena UBT), and others.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that the SIR in Bihar raised alarm among opposition parties, who fear a covert operation to manipulate voter rolls.
“There is an undeclared emergency in Bihar. Voters’ names are being removed under the guise of revision. We’ll raise this and other key issues—like foreign policy missteps, delimitation, and atrocities against Dalits and women—during the session,” Tiwari said.
In response, the Election Commission stated on Friday that 95.92% of Bihar’s electorate has been covered under the draft electoral list so far. Out of 7.89 crore voters, more than 7.57 crore have been verified, with 32.23 lakh forms pending.
According to the EC, the exercise involves nearly 1 lakh BLOs, 4 lakh volunteers, and 1.5 lakh political party-appointed BLAs, aiming to ensure no eligible voter is left out from the final roll, due to be published on August 1, 2025.
